Here at Navy Federal, May is an extra special month. We celebrate and honor military members and their families as part of National Military Appreciation Month. It’s a month Congress designated nearly 19 years ago as a time for our entire nation to recognize, remember and appreciate both current and former servicemembers, and their families.

Serving military members and their families for over 85 years has given us a deep understanding of our members’ unique lifestyles and needs – especially support. This May, we’re excited to join forces with Operation Gratitude to honor, support and appreciate those who serve. Founded in 2003, Operation Gratitude began as a grassroots movement to remind troops that people at home appreciate the sacrifices they make every day. Today, they’ve mailed over 2 million care packages to servicemembers across the globe. And we’re excited to join them on their mission to say thank you to every American who serves.

How Can You Honor, Support and Appreciate This May?

Thank a servicemember at a Navy Federal branch near you during our Letters of Gratitude drive! From May 1 – 31, Navy Federal members can stop into any of our US branches to write a personal letter of appreciation (or as many as you want!) for their selfless service. Stationery will be available at the branch. Letters will be collected and mailed with care packages sent around the world.

These letters are often the most cherished items in a care box. Here are a few tips from Operation Gratitude to help you write!

Tips for Your Thank You

  1. Start with “Dear Hero,” “Dear Brave One” or something similar
  2. Express your gratitude for their selfless service
  3. Share a little about yourself
  4. Sign your card (if you include your contact info, you may get a reply)

A simple thank you note can go a long way in recognizing a servicemember for their commitment and bravery. We look forward to seeing you in our branches across the country!

Employee Care Package Assembly

We’re also excited to get Navy Federal employees involved in this mission. Navy Federal employees in Vienna, Virginia, Winchester, Virginia, Herndon, Virginia, and Pensacola, Florida will be assembling 5,000 care packages at employee events during Military Appreciation Month. We can’t wait to get to work – stay tuned to the blog, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for a recap and pictures from the event!
