Every May, we celebrate and honor military members and their families as part of National Military Appreciation Month. It’s a month Congress designated nearly 18 years ago as a time for our entire nation to recognize, remember and appreciate both current and former servicemembers, and their families.

There are several national observances throughout the month to recognize military accomplishments and sacrifices, including:

  • Loyalty Day – May 1
  • Victory in Europe Day, commemorating the end of WWII – May 8
  • Military Spouse Appreciation Day – May 12
  • Armed Forces Day – May 20
  • Memorial Day – May 29

Here at Navy Federal, May is an extra special month. We’ve been serving military members and their families for over 80 years. Many of our own employees have served as well. As a result, we understand our members’ unique lifestyles and needs. Whether you’re a military member getting ready to deploy, a veteran transitioning to civilian life or a family member waiting for a loved one to return home, Navy Federal is here to provide a lifetime of guidance and support.

This year, we’re celebrating Military Appreciation Month with a special social media challenge. We want to hear about your military experience or a servicemember you’d like to honor – for a chance to win up to $5,000! The challenge is underway so it’s time to get creative and have some fun!

Simply create a one-minute video and upload it on Instagram for a chance to win. Be sure to include the official challenge hashtag – #ProudToServeChallenge – with your submission. You have the entire month of May to upload your entry. Need some ideas to get you started?

Here are some ways you can highlight military appreciation in your one-minute video:

  • Thank an Active Duty servicemember or veteran
  • Share your military experience:
    • Why are you #ProudToServe?
    • What does Military Appreciation Month mean to you?

Other tips: Be as original, creative, and entertaining as possible – that’s how we’ll determine five 1st prize winners who will each be awarded $5,000, 10 runners up who will receive $1,000 each, and 15 honorable mention winners who will each win $250.

Think you’ve got an award-winning idea? Before you hit record, be sure to check out the official challenge submission guidelines and make sure your video is in line with Instagram’s community policies. Winners will be announced in mid-June after the challenge officially ends on May 31.

Good luck and thank you for helping us honor those who serve and their families during Military Appreciation Month!
